Umoja Magazine photo and photo essay submissions are the opportunity for our photographic storytellers stories to be included in our cultural narrative. Umoja Magazine was founded in 1968 as a communication vehicle and bi-product of the 1968 Black Power Conference. Umoja Magazine is your opportunity to be professionally published in an historic publication.

Next Gen Blueprint for Their Future. Submissions are now being accepted.
We want your real view, honest pictures. We’re looking for authentic stories that start conversations. We want original images you have taken that answer the following questions: What are your concerns? What are the most challenging aspects of your lives? What is the vision you have for your future, your community’s future, and the future of the world you will inherit? How will you create and fully nurture functional, sustainable, loving family units, economically vibrant and self-sufficient communities, and a peaceful world? Where do we go from here?

- Photo essays: Four (4) to ten (10) photos
- Singles. Stand alone images.
- Copyright. You must completely own your copyright to submit work to us. Please don’t submit your photos unless you own 100% of your copyright.
- Unpublished. We are only interested in work that has not been widely published. We will ask you to list where the work has been published and will decide on a case by case basis. Publishing the work on a personal website or social media is okay.
- Timely. Singles should be no more than one year old. Photo essays should have at least some images made in the last two years, even if the bulk of the essay is long-term.
- Ethics. Standard photojournalistic best practices should be followed. NOTE: As this special issue is a requiem on how you perceive your future, it is okay if there is some manipulation in telling your story. Though, falsely reporting of others situations is not ethical and will not be supported.
- High resolution photos, 300 dpi or higher, preferably via a link provided in the submission form below. You can give us a link to your personal website, or a service like WeTransfer, Dropbox or Google Drive. You may also upload up to 10 photos as a zip file in the submission form.
- Captions, even if they are rough captions. You can embed the captions in the metadata of the photos or provide them in a separate document and upload in the submission form or include the caption document in your zip file.
- A synopsis or summary of the work of no more than 200 words. It’s okay if it is a rough draft. Complete in submission form.
